Dayton man killed in Xenia Avenue house fire identified

A disabled man killed Wednesday afternoon inside a fire at his Xenia Avenue home has been identified.

Montgomery County Coroner Dr. Kent Hershbarger identified the man as 50-year-old James Robbie Hall, of Dayton. Hall’s cause and manner of death have not been determined at this time

Crews were called around 4:15 p.m. to the 100 block of Xenia Avenue at house on the corner of Xenia and Kastner avenues in Dayton.

“When we arrived we actually had citizens that were trying to get the individual out of the house,” said David Wright, district chief of the Dayton Fire Department. “The fire was blowing out pretty heavy out the front door. It was very, very hot. It’s a good thing somebody didn’t go in there.”

“Crews immediately went into rescue mode,” Wright said. “There was an individual that was down in the middle of the house. We were able to get him out, but unfortunately, he did not survive.”

The man, later identified as Hall, had been yelling for help from his neighbors before crews were dispatched, Wright said. He was in an office area on the first floor of the home, where he lived with three others.

None of the other occupants was home at the time of the fire, which Wright said is under investigation.

“There’s quite a bit of fire damage to the house,” Wright said.

A firefighter also suffered a minor injury at the scene.

The American Red Cross was called to assist the three residents who have been displaced.

This is the second fire fatality in Dayton this year.
